Small Class Size

Small Class Size: We are one of the few tuition centres in Singapore running small classes of no more than 6 students except for certain special classes.

Us vs. mainstream schools & most tuition centres

  1. We are one of the few tuition centres in Singapore running small classes of no more than 6 students*.
  2. Mainstream schools in Singapore have a class size ranging from 30-40. The teacher is usually hard pressed to provide enough attention to everyone, especially the slower learners.
  3. With a small class size, our tutor can get to know each student better and has the bandwidth to offer individual attention and guidance.

* Except for certain special classes

Small Group Learning vs. 1-to-1 Tuition

On the other hand, we believe that small group learning offers several advantages not found in 1-to-1 tuition.

  1. More interaction among students, whether through collaboration or friendly competition. Interaction makes the lesson fun and exciting, motivating the student and allowing him to enjoy the learning.
  2. Opportunities for peer teaching which is very helpful to the student “teaching” his peers. Studies have shown that this improves content retention and understanding.
  3. Opportunities for peer learning. Some students understand certain concepts better when they are taught by their peers who may connect better with them.

A small class size is useful for students who have difficulty coping in their school work due to the relatively large class size in mainstream schools

Why mainstream schools have a relatively large class size all these years

Trying to get MOE to reduce the size of its classes is nothing new. For a perspective on the relatively large class size in mainstream schools, read this Straits Times article: Are smaller class sizes worth the trouble?

Our thoughts in response to the article

  1. Education in Singapore is based on a cost-benefit model.
  2. Apparently, improving the quality of MOE’s teachers is more cost effective than reducing the class size.
  3. We totally agree that the quality of the teacher is of paramount importance in providing a quality education to our students. In fact, we look for similar qualities in our tutors e.g. passion, patience, dedication, subject matter expertise.
  4. Nevertheless, there will always be individual students who cannot cope with the way they are being taught in a large class no matter how good the teacher is.
  5. These students need greater attention and help not possible in a mainstream school given the emotionless constraints of logistics.
  6. We believe that it is the job of tuition to take up the slack in such cases so that these students can receive the attention and help they need.
